We are careful about one thing: laboratory research on an ingredient is not the same as a claim about a finished cosmetic product. PrimeGuard products are cosmetic skincare, not drugs. The research below explains why we chose the ingredients we did. It doesn't turn our balm into a medication.

Manuka essential oil is steam-distilled from Leptospermum scoparium. Its chemistry varies dramatically by growing region, most Manuka oil contains only small amounts of the beta-triketone compounds (Leptospermone, Flavesone, Isoleptospermone) that are the focus of most research.
East Cape Manuka, grown in a specific region of New Zealand's North Island, is the exception. It naturally develops high concentrations of these triketones. The 40+ designation refers to essential oil documented at more than 40% total triketones, not to be confused with the MGO/UMF rating systems used for Manuka honey, which are unrelated.
Tea tree oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, an Australian tree. Its principal active compound is terpinen-4-ol.
Tea tree is one of the most-researched botanical antimicrobials in the peer-reviewed literature. The Carson 2006 review below is the standard reference, a comprehensive synthesis of laboratory research on tea tree's antibacterial and antifungal activity.
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a hardy shrub whose berries produce one of the most fatty-acid-dense oils used in cosmetic chemistry. It contains omega-3, omega-6, omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), and omega-9 fatty acids alongside carotenoids, tocopherols, and phytosterols, the compounds that give it its golden color and its skin-conditioning profile.
Zinc oxide is a mineral UV filter used across broad-spectrum sunscreen formulations. PrimeGuard uses supplier-documented non-nano zinc oxide rather than particles manufactured at the nanoscale, non-nano particles are larger and are designed to remain primarily on the skin's surface.
The Mohammed 2019 study below examined even smaller zinc oxide nanoparticle sunscreens in human volunteers over repeated application. The particles accumulated on the skin surface and within skin furrows without entering the viable epidermis or producing observed cellular toxicity under realistic-use conditions.
"Reef safe" has no standardized federal definition, and no sunscreen can guarantee zero impact on every aquatic organism. NOAA identifies non-mineral UV filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate) and nano-sized zinc oxide among sunscreen ingredients that may affect aquatic organisms. NOAA also describes mineral sunscreens as generally showing fewer effects on aquatic life.
Mineral Sun Balm is formulated without oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, aerosol propellants, or intentionally manufactured nano zinc oxide. That's why we call it reef-conscious, an accurate description of what we chose to leave out, not a promise about aquatic ecosystems.
